Statute of Limitations?

2009/01/25 · 2 Comments

This rock’s been rolling around my head for a bit:

Is there a statute of limitations on writing about past blog posts written on other’s blogs?

Would writing about old posts be the equivallent of approaching an acquaintance after not seeing that person for a year and saying, “Remember when you said _____________? Well, I was thinking about it and realized ________________.”

Just curious.

I don’t think the issue is one of time passed; if the issue raised in a two-year-old blog post is relevant today for some reason, why not address it? I would, however, try to see if the author had written anything more recently on the topic and address that as well.

One thing I’m finding in this enormous asynchronous conversation called blogging is that often, someone will link to a blog post or topic I might have read a month or more ago, and I’ll think, “Shoot, I should have written about that back when I first read it!” What’s old to me might have been brand new to you, or vice versa.

Thanks, Damian. You’re right about “What’s old to me might have been brand new to you, or vice versa.”
Saving posts on my bloglines account got me thinking about this. And then I realized that saving old posts is like saving old newspapers and magazines.
